In this podcast Dr Shaadi Manouchehri will discuss all things dentistry including, but not limited to, common dental conditions and treatments. The show welcomes guests regularly, including dental professionals and experts in their fields as well as patients who will share their personal journey and hopefully provide some entertainment along the way! This podcast may also at times feature alternative but relevant topics such as social media and dentists, mental health and facial aesthetics. Dr Shaadi is a cosmetic dentist based in London having graduated from Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, followed by completing postgraduate training posts in specialist fields including paediatric dentistry, restorative dentistry and oral and maxillofacial surgery. She regularly features in dental journals and has recently published “How to Get into Dental School”, a beginner’s guide for prospective dental students.

Dr Eskander graduated from Leeds University in 2010 and completed her vocational training in a practice in Kent. During this year she won the prize for the ‘Best Case Presentation’ – a complex restorative case which involved several disciplines in dentistry. Dr Eskander is dedicated to post graduate training and has successfully passed her MJDF examinations. Dr Rhona Eskander regularly features in magazines and papers, as well as on tv educating the public on matters of oral health, debunking dental myths and appropriate dental treatments.
In this episode, Dr Rhona and I talk about dentistry and social media and how this has evolved over the past few years. Dr Rhona shares her journey including her challenges at dental school and how she has converted her dental practice (which she acquired just before lockdown in March this year) from not having many patients to being booked up months in advance. Dr Rhona also shares her experience with online trolls and how she deals with the negative aspects of social media as well as her experience with treating influencers and celebrities.

Dr Yusra is a dental surgeon and a medical aesthetic clinician. She first qualified from Imperial College London with a First class honours degree in Medical Science and Healthcare Management, then as a dental surgeon with Honours and Distinction from King’s College London. Dr Yusra completed her dental training, moving on to oral and maxillofacial surgical training in the years following this. She completed her Diploma of Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, followed by Membership of the Joint Dental Faculties at The Royal College of Surgeons of England.
In the first part of this episode Dr Yusra shares an honest account of her journey and how she became a facial aesthetics practitioner, she shares her pitfalls along her journey and how she defined her purpose and her ‘why’. Dr Yusra shares how she manages her personal life and being a mother alongside running a successful business.
In the second part of the episode, Dr Yusra explains the ageing process of the face and explains how we “age in layers”. We discuss the visible signs of the ageing process and how we can treat common complaints. Dr Yusra shares how a lot of her clients have been complaining of skin concerns such as pigmentation which have resulted from increased screen time during lockdown.

Dr Shivana Anand qualified as a dentist from Guys, Kings and St Thomas’ in London where she is now doing her specialist training in Prosthodontics. After qualifying she completed a year of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery at The Eastman Dental hospital. She currently works in general private practice building her dental and aesthetics patient base. She is the Co-Founder of Dental Training Consultants, which host bi-annual courses helping young dentists prepare for life in Dentistry. Shivana believes in supporting charity and is an ambassador for the Dental Wellness Trust.
In the first part of this episode, Shivana shares her journey with dentistry including how she dealt with rejection after her first attempt at applying to dental school. We discuss how we have both learnt from our “failures” and how they were a necessary component of our path to success.
In the second part of this episode, we discuss the causes of missing teeth. Shivana and I talk about dentures, bridges and dental implants as treatment options as well as discuss their pros and cons. We also talk about whether it is really necessary to replace missing teeth.

Raabiha qualified from Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry in 2014 with honours. She completed her Dental Foundation Training (DFT) in North East London where she later became a joint DFT trainer. She has worked as a general dentist at several practices in London and recently become a practice owner. She is passionate about teaching and uses her social media to inspire the next of generation of dentists to grow both personally and professionally.
In this episode, Raabiha and I discuss our dental journeys, our experience with social media and how we found our individual purpose for creating content. We talk about failure and learning from mistakes. Raabiha and I also answer one of the most frequently asked questions that we receive from our young followers: “should I study Medicine or Dentistry?”

Shima is a board certified dietician having completed her Dietetics program at California State University. She currently specialises in Diabetes, Kidney Disease and is currently working at UCLA Hospital and Davita Dialysis Center, she also sees patients at her private practice.
In this episode we discuss the impact of nutrition on oral health. We talk about eating disorders such as Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia and their impact on oral health. We also discuss the importance of seeking professional help when recovering from an eating disorder and the health risks associated with introducing foods back into the diet without careful planning. Shima shares practical tips for incorporating healthy eating and lifestyle habits into our daily routine and tells us what she thinks of “unhealthy healthy foods” and whether vitamins and supplements are really necessary. We explore how dieting can actually make you gain weight and why it might be better to opt for regular foods compared to their low fat alternatives.

Hana is currently a fourth year dental student at the University of Bristol. She was born and raised and Dubai and moved to England in 2014 to complete her GCSE and A-level examinations. She then got accepted into the University of Bristol’s dental school in 2017 as an international student and is now one year away from qualifying.
In this episode, Hana and I share an honest and surprisingly emotional account of our experience with dental school. We talk about the highs, the lows and discuss just how important it is to seek help when needed. We talk about our most memorable patient interactions during dental school and the advice we would give to our younger self having learnt from our mistakes throughout our experience.

Dr Yewande Oduwole is a recently qualified dentist currently completing her dental foundation training. She was the winner of the FGDP (UK) Dental Student of the Year Award, which she received for her demonstrable passion for oral health and dentistry. This includes mentoring prospective dental students and also online delivery of oral health advice to the public through her YouTube channel. Dr Yewande enjoys engaging in community outreach, focusing on oral health promotion in both schools and in her local community. This led to her embarking on a project in Ghana to provide free dental care and oral health education to communities, schools and orphanages. She has been a representative for various dental organisations such as the BDA, BACD, FGDP and is currently an Editorial board member for Dentistry online.
In the first part of this episode, Dr Yewande shares her dental journey so far and how she dealt with rejection after her first round of applications to dental school. This also became the inspiration behind her YouTube channel and social media platforms. In the second part of this episode, we talk about some simple but effective ways of looking after your oral health. We discuss some common misconceptions with regards to oral healthcare such as rinsing after brushing and how much toothpaste you really need. We also explain what bleeding gums during a routine examination can tell us about your oral health.

Dr. Desiree Yazdan completed her Masters of Science in Craniofacial Biology and her Doctorate of Dental Surgery at Herman Ostrow at The USC School Of Dentistry. Dr Yazdan immersed herself into learning how to transform, reconstruct, and create beautiful smiles with her education, skills, talents, and has continued to refine her skills throughout the years. Her current practice is located in Newport Beach, CA and mainly focuses on cosmetic treatment. Dr. Yazdan has always been passionate about transforming smiles and she was featured on The Doctors TV Show for a smile makeover. Interestingly enough, she built her business using social media and, for the past 4 years Dr. Yazdan has been coaching other healthcare professionals how to grow their businesses using social media. Dr Malaki has been a specialist periodontist since 2010 and is a Consultant at Guys Dental Hospital and Honorary Senior Lecturer at Kings College London. Dr Malaki’s main interest lies in managing patients presenting with gum disease and related medical conditions. She is passionate about teaching and is involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching at Kings College. Dr Malaki is also co-founder of PerioAcademy, which is dedicated to teaching postgraduate dentists in general dental practice. Dr Malaki works in private practice in Chelsea and Beaconsfield. Her previous positions include Clinical Lead of the Department of Periodontology at Guys Dental Hospital.
In this episode, Dr Malaki and I talk about the link between gum disease and overall health. We explore the role of nutritional deficiencies and medical conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease in the development of periodontal disease. We also discuss how hormonal changes can make the gum tissues hyper-responsive to plaque, for example during puberty and pregnancy in women due to an increase in circulating oestrogen and progesterone levels. Dr Malaki discusses the impact of smoking and also vaping on gum tissues and provides practical advice for beating this habit.
