Dr Malaki has been a specialist periodontist since 2010 and is a Consultant at Guys Dental Hospital and Honorary Senior Lecturer at Kings College London. Dr Malaki’s main interest lies in managing patients presenting with gum disease and related medical conditions. She is passionate about teaching and is involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching at Kings College. In this episode, Dr Malaki and I talk about the link between gum disease and overall health. We explore the role of nutritional deficiencies and medical conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease in the development of periodontal disease. We also discuss how hormonal changes can make the gum tissues hyper-responsive to plaque, for example during puberty and pregnancy in women due to an increase in circulating oestrogen and progesterone levels. Dr Malaki discusses the impact of smoking and also vaping on gum tissues and provides practical advice for beating this habit.
