Dr Yewande Oduwole is a recently qualified dentist currently completing her dental foundation training. She was the winner of the FGDP (UK) Dental Student of the Year Award, which she received for her demonstrable passion for oral health and dentistry. This includes mentoring prospective dental students and also online delivery of oral health advice to the public through her YouTube channel. Dr Yewande enjoys engaging in community outreach, focusing on oral health promotion in both schools and in her local community. This led to her embarking on a project in Ghana to provide free dental care and oral health education to communities, schools and orphanages. She has been a representative for various dental organisations such as the BDA, BACD, FGDP and is currently an Editorial board member for Dentistry online.
In the first part of this episode, Dr Yewande shares her dental journey so far and how she dealt with rejection after her first round of applications to dental school. This also became the inspiration behind her YouTube channel and social media platforms. In the second part of this episode, we talk about some simple but effective ways of looking after your oral health. We discuss some common misconceptions with regards to oral healthcare such as rinsing after brushing and how much toothpaste you really need. We also explain what bleeding gums during a routine examination can tell us about your oral health.
